Gas (GAS) declined 2.26% to $1.1206, trading in a range as broader macro-crypto caution offsets ongoing technical upgrades within the Neo ecosystem, such as the Neo X sidechain deployment.1 Near-term price action remains subdued alongside thin exchange liquidity and lingering supply adjustments.1
GAS is a utility token native to the NEO blockchain, one of the earliest major blockchain platforms that emerged during the 2017 cryptocurrency boom. The token functions as the fuel mechanism for the NEO network, required to pay transaction fees and deploy or execute smart contracts on the platform. NEO, often referred to as "Chinese Ethereum," utilizes a delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance (dBFT) consensus mechanism, and GAS tokens are generated through this consensus process as rewards to network validators. Unlike some other blockchain fuel tokens, GAS serves a dual purpose as both a network utility and a governance token, allowing holders to participate in protocol decisions. The token gained notable recognition as an early alternative to Ethereum's ETH in emerging markets, particularly in Asia, and represents an important example of how different blockchain platforms structure their fee mechanisms and incentive systems. GAS tokens are traded on major cryptocurrency exchanges and can be obtained by holding NEO tokens, which generates GAS distribution to holders at regular intervals.
